Head Lice Removal With Henna
There are many natural head lice removal methods. Products made of silicone combined with essential oils are now available in pharmacies or stores of natural products, and you can also make your own powerful home remedies using vinegar or different types of oils. Another not well-know natural remedy that has proven effective against lice is henna.
Neutral henna can fight against lice as it helps make the hair an inhospitable environment for this parasite and its eggs, the nits. By its coating action on the hair, it prevents the nits from sticking to the hair shafts. And it protects the hair from a reinfestation for about 6 months. You can then make preventive treatments with neutral henna before each school year as well as in spring.
Ingredients of your henna treatment:
-1 bag of neutral non-dyeing henna (Cassia obovata)
-hot water or lavender flowers tea
-1 to 1 ½ cup white vinegar
-optional: a few drops of lavender essential oil, soft shampoo
Precautions you should take:
Do not put salt into the mix: salt is used as a fixative during Natural Henna dyeing (Lawsonia inermis), but it is useless for neutral henna (Cassia obovata). In addition, it can irritate the scalp by scratching. Vinegar can be aggressive on small wounds due to scratching, so do not use any if the scalp is irritated.
After using neutral henna you should wait for 6 months before applying any synthetic coloring.
How you should apply the henna treatment:
-Make the mixture with hot water, not more than 41 degrees Celsius so that it is bearable for children, but not less than 39 degrees Celsius, as the louse dies at a temperature over 40 degrees.
-Put the mixture on the child's head: insist on the roots, as nits are laid on or near the scalp, because they need heat for incubation.
-Once the hair is completely coated, wrap it with a plastic wrap to keep the heat as long as possible, but also to avoid henna stains. Wrap with a towel, and leave as many hours as possible (a whole morning, or better one night if the child can bear this).
-Rinse and shampoo until complete elimination of the Henna Paste.
-Finish the treatment by drying with a hair dryer at the highest bearable temperature and as close to the scalp as possible, without going as far as to burn your child of course! The idea is to kill those head lice that would have been fortunate enough to survive the henna treatment. But this is not necessary usually, as the henna is very effective.
Remember to make a shampoo against nits a few days later and more importantly to remove lice with a lice comb during at least two weeks.
You can from time to time rinse the hair with warm vinegar and a few drops of lavender essential oil. But vinegar is not recommended in case of wounds due to scratching and it also moderates the effect of henna which prevents the nits from sticking to the hair.
Ultimately you should check during several days to see if the treatment was effective, and if for about 3 weeks everything is normal you can stop the treatment. Just put a few drops of lavender essential oil as a preventive measure against other infestations during the whole head lice season.
