Gun Control Myths

One of the most controversial issues in American society is gun control. Claims fly back and forth across the pro and anti-gun control factions about things like crime rates, assault weapons and gun shows. Many false statements about guns have been repeated often enough to become facts in the eyes of the public. Yet there is a wealth of online information from such reputable institutions as the Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) that dispute these claims with scientific evidence. Here are some common gun myths examined:

"Handguns have a 43-fold chance of killing your family member instead of a criminal." False.

This statement is enough to put many people squarely on the anti-gun side of the fence. But is it true? The controversial study referenced in this claim was made by Dr. Arthur L. Kellermann and published in the 1986 New England Journal of Medicine. Many detractors have pointed out that the study data was flawed and that 86% of the 43 deaths reported in the study were suicides rather than homicides. The remaining deaths had key mitigating factors such as convicted felons, domestic battery, and drug deals.

"Gun Shows are meant for criminals to buy guns from unlicensed dealers." False.

Gun dealers are very tightly regulated and licensed, and are required to purchase a Federal Firearms License (FFL) to conduct business. A recent DoJ study proved that less than one percent of convicted felons got their weapons at gun shows. Nearly forty percent bought or traded their guns from street dealers. Another FBI study shows that none of the gun show firearms purchased had been used to kill police, refuting another related myth. And a BATF analysis of guns used in crimes found that 93% were illegally obtained, not from a reputable dealer or a gun show.

"Concealed carry permits are for crazy gun nuts or wannabe cops." False.

People that have licensed permits for carrying a concealed weapon (CCW) are responsible, trained gun owners, not vigilantes or self-appointed "sheriffs." The facts prove this out in the state of Texas, for example: the public, (non-CCW permit holders) are nearly fourteen times more likely to be arrested for non-violent crimes, and five times more likely to be arrested for violent crimes. Florida has allowed the carrying of concealed weapons for more than two decades—and you have double the odds of getting attacked by an alligator than by a CCW permit holder.
