Oh, What a Day!
A historic day in the annals of humanity
To be written in the indelible ink of time
A day indeed!
We may jump and scream
A scream not of sorrows
A scream not of sadness
But of pains of joy.
Some 400 years ago
So the journey started
A mother was forced from her suckling infant
No show of human sympathy
No consideration of human brotherhood
But bundled on a ship.
Straight across the Atlantic
Leaving the helpless child in anguish of cries
As the father himself was immobilized in death
By the same vicious captors
A horrendous, brutal enemy
Families were annihilated
Villages, tribes and tongues were destroyed
From hamlet to hamlet, town to town
Echoes of wailing, lamentation and deep sighs of anguish reverberated
Life in black Africa was incapacitated
By these crooks of trans-Atlantic trade
Even the sadistic slave trade makers
Landed in a strange land
Our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and cousins
With no friends
No one to turn to
But only few kind-hearted fellows.
In slavery were they subjected
With all dignity of a human being stripped off
Naked and hungry
Worn out as subjected to inferior human status
Even a "white" dog was better
Oh, God what have we done?
For 400 years the struggled continued
As they feebly tried to prove
That they also belong to the human race
But the captors remained catastrophic
The villain remained villainy
From Martin Luther King Jnr. to Nelson Mandela
From, Kwameh Nkrumah, the nationalist, to George Washington Carver, the black scientist
From Koffi Anan, the UN ex-scribe, to Emeka Anyaoku, the Commonwealth ex-boss
From Jesse Jackson, the politician, to Collin Powel, the black military commander
Battles of war were waged on all fronts
Not a war to kill fellow humans
Not a war to destroy lives
Not a revenge
For we be no God to take revenge in our hands
But a war to prove we also are humans.
Humans that deserve dignity
Humans with a right to live
Humans like every other humans
So our children will also stand -
Even among the congregation of humans.
Today, another victory is won
Barak Obama's election is a victory
Not just for Obama
Not just for Mrs. Michelle Obama and their children
But a victory for the black race
That we also are humans and deserve human dignity
Therefore, brothers and sisters
The "black" race all over the world
Let's toast this day to this well deserved victory
A hard-won victory
That God has vindicated us again - that we be humans also.
But it's only a battle
Many more battles of this war still remain
A battle to liberate black race from poverty of knowledge
A battle to liberate black race from poverty of material substance
A battle to liberate Mother Africa -
From her ignorance, myriad sicknesses, and grave poverty.
Howbeit, we clap our hands in praise to God
As we this day join the spirits of Martin Luther King Jnr. and others
Men who went before us and laid down their lives for this course
To rejoice today
Indeed, the Day the LORD has made!
